Footsteps Walking With You – a valuable counselling service for young people

Footsteps Walking With You was set up last year to provide affordable counselling for young people aged 11-25 in Suffolk.  It also offers workshops to schools and community groups on issues relating to mental health.

The vision for the charity grew as a response to the need it discovered amongst young people in one church and community in Martlesham.  There seemed to be a never-ending stream of young people in need of help with nowhere to turn.  As local worshippers prayed for these youngsters, they realised that God was calling them to do something about it!  As a result, Footsteps Walking With You was born. Since then it has seen God bless it with finance, rooms to work from at Quay Church in Woodbridge and masses of support from people in both churches and the community who recognise just how much this project is needed.

The charity has had requests for help from young people from all over Suffolk and beyond.  Currently it is open on a Tuesday afternoon until 6pm but from September it will be open on Thursdays as well.

Counselling with young people is often a very creative process; it may involve artwork, puppets, playdough or even Russian dolls to help people explore their situation and their feelings around it, as you can see in the picture.

It’s hugely rewarding to be able to help youngsters and the charity has had some wonderful feedback  – not just from the young people themselves but also from their families who are often desperate to find a way forward.
