On the Bookshelf

    Back in May of this year, Fr John Thackray of St Mary-at-the-Elms in Ipswich told Network Suffolk a little bit about his life and his ministry. You can read the full article here.

    Now Fr John tells us about the book he would like to put on the Network Suffolk bookshelf;

    ” A book that has had a very real influence on my ministry is “The Gospel of Folly” by Patrick Forbes, who is a clown and an ordained priest.

    I read it just before I took up my first appointment as a school chaplain. It is autobiographical; a reflection on what it is like being both clown and priest. It has encouraged me to realise that, especially in school ministry, it is important to be alongside those who are on the margins of life; it has encouraged me to realise that although I take what I represent seriously I should not take myself too seriously. I can’t now recall how I discovered the book, but I have given my copy away several times yet still have two copies on my bookshelf. I re-read it every couple of years.”

    If you would like to read “The Gospel of Folly” for yourself you may have to ask  Fr John if you can borrow one of his copies! It is currently out of stock but Network Suffolk was able to find several very inexpensive copies on ebay. If you do read it or have already read it, please let Network Suffolk know if it would be a top choice for the Network Suffolk bookshelf. If not, please let us know which book you would choose?
